The mountains of Southern Utah are renowned for their stark and startling beauty. With superb skiing in the winter and excellent hiking and sight-seeing opportunities in the summers, there are plenty of reasons to build a Southern Utah mountain home. Most people, when they think of communities in Southern Utah, think of places like Cedar City, St. George, or even Bryce. However, there are smaller communities off the beaten path for folks who value their privacy, but still want access to world-class recreation and exquisite views. Here are three of our top choices for where to build your very own mountain home in Southern Utah.
Brian Head
The most elevated town in Utah, Brian Head is one of the best places in southern Utah for a mountain home, especially for families and individuals who enjoy winter recreation. There’s world-class skiing on your doorstep here. At 9,600 feet, skiing and snowboarding at Brian Head stays active and available well into April. Of course, there are other recreation opportunities too. With several spas in town and excellent mountain biking and hiking during the summer, Brian Head is a great place to consider building a custom home.
Brian Head is small, which can be a negative for some people looking to build a custom home, but the small town atmosphere lends itself to privacy. If you’re looking for not just a custom home, but a true mountain hideaway, we strongly recommend this small skiing community. You’ll be overjoyed waking up in the morning in a fine log home with gorgeous views of the mountains and the stunning nearby Cedar Breaks.
Duck Creek Village
However, if you’d prefer to build your mountain home in a less elevated location, we can’t recommend Duck Creek Village enough. What makes this one of the best places in southern Utah for a mountain home? Simple: its accessibility, beautiful views, and amenities. Accessibility, in this case, means that Duck Creek Village is just an hour’s drive away from some of southern Utah’s most remarkable sights and experiences. You can make it to Brain Head, Cedar City, Bryce Canyon, Cedar Breaks, and more in a day trip. While Duck Creek Village is primarily a resort community, there are many exclusive subdivisions, such as Elk Ridge Estates, and year-round homes available for those looking to build a custom home in the area.
Duck Creek Village is also home to many quirky restaurants and shops, and the relatively short drive to places like Cedar City means you have access to more amenities than some other communities in southern Utah. While Duck Creek is more centrally-located, that doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice privacy when building your custom home here. There are plenty of secluded backroads to build your mountain home on.
Panguitch Lake
As the name suggests, this remote community in southern Utah sits around scenic Panguitch Lake. If you’re looking for a place to build a mountain home, this small town is certainly an option, but it’s even better for those who love to fish. Year-round fishing gives anglers access to some of the largest Rainbow Trout in Utah, with boat rentals available, if you don’t want to go to the trouble of keeping a boat of your own in storage. Why do we recommend Panguitch Lake for building a custom home? Well, besides the great fishing, there are also tons of trails for horseback riding, hiking, and snowshoeing. There are also exceptional mountain views and plenty of curious wildlife – which can be both a positive and a negative.
Panguitch Lake and the surrounding rural areas are wonderful places to build your custom mountain home. You can have a creek running through your backyard and wake up to see deer walking across your driveway. If you’re looking for a remote mountain retreat, far from the hustle and bustle of big city life, consider building a custom home here, or in one of these other mountain communities. You’ll thank yourself for it.
